On Jyestha amavasya,Shani jayanti celebrating the birth anniversary of Shani dev is held with a lot of religious fervour. Shani is commonly the most dreaded planet in Astrology. Physically the planet Saturn represents Shani Dev. Shani is also the brother of Yama and is considered the God of justice.In Mythology, Saturn is supposed to be born by the union of Sun with Chhaya (shadow, represented by the Rahu-Ketu axis in Vedic Astrology).

Shani is also a male deity in the Puranas, whose iconography consists of a handsome,dark figure carrying a sword (sceptre), and sitting on a crow. He is the God of Justice in Hindu religion and delivers results to all, depending upon their thoughts, speech and karma. He also signifies spiritual asceticism, penance, discipline and hard work. His consort is goddess Manda .
